The Idea

International Languages Week

Sunday 16 - Saturday 22 August 2009

Languages Can Take You Places......... in every sense of the word

.
International Languages Week is now well established in New Zealand communities and schools, with many doing creative, entertaining things to get across the importance for New Zealanders of learning international languages.

In 2008 we plan to take International Languages Week to the furthest corners of Aotearoa New Zealand with school based activities and celebrations reaching out into the the wider community from the Far North to the Deep South. Exciting things are happening in schools as the initiative to offer languages other than English in all schools with Year 7, 8, 9 or 10 classes gathers momentum. International Languages Week offers the ideal opportunity to showcase these developments and to inform and inspire the wider community.

Everyone can participate in the Greetings Project (Ni hao! on Monday, Bonjour! on Tuesday, Guten Tag! on Wednesday, Konnichiwa! on Thursday and Buenos días! on Friday), and perhaps speakers of other languages could teach people further greetings.
